Happy 4th of July – Celebrate Safely!

Happy Independence Day!

The 4th of July will be celebrated in every town and city throughout the United States, including our neck of the American woods: Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, DC, and so on. It is a time when many will gather together, sing, dance, rejoice, and enjoy good food and close friends. Still more will gaze into the heavens after dusk to watch captivating fireworks displays.

Independence Day is not just a celebration, however. It is a day to remember those we have lost, those who have fought, and those who have served – and those who still do.

No matter how you celebrate, however, please remember to do so safely. Alcohol does not mix with cars and drivingĀ – nor does it mix with boating, operating a grill, or especially lighting fireworks. Drive sober and celebrate safely.

A few tips to help you celebrate safely, and in style:
– Never drown pork-chops in barbecue sauce. They taste delicious basted, but think coating rather than floundering;
– Not all fireworks are legal in Maryland. If you live along the DC-VA border, bear in mind that what you purchased on your way home might be legal at home. Good advice: only use what you buy, where you buy it. (So: buy in DC, use in DC, etc)
– Bring a small grocery bag with you if you are going out to watch fireworks. Chances are you will get a bottle of water or a soda, and its better to take your trash with you and dispose of it, then face a fine for littering
– The same laws for DUI apply to boats as they do to cars. If you have a few beers, then let someone else man the helm/tiller/etc
