Blaszkow Legal, PLLC Feb. 21, 2024

Chesapeake, VA (February 21, 2024) – One person has died as a result of a motor vehicle accident reported in the Chesapeake area on Monday, February 19. The Virginia State Police was notified of the crash just before 6:00 p.m.

According to local law enforcement, a gray 2000 Toyota Solara collided with a red 2008 Pontiac Vibe on Interstate 664 and the Bauer Hills area. After the collision, both of the vehicles veered off the side of the road and struck a guardrail. The impact of the crash caused the Pontiac to overturn. The incident blocked multiple southbound lanes of the road, causing delays throughout the area.

The driver of the Toyota, 19-year-old Lauryn Leonard, was fatally injured. She was immediately pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Pontiac, 18-year-old Elvis Cruz, was injured. He was transported to Norfolk Sentara Hospital for medical treatment. The Virginia State Police are currently investigating.

We hope Elvis Cruz recovers quickly following this crash.

Our condolences go out to the family of Lauryn Leonard.

Fatal Car Accidents in Virginia

Statistics from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles reveal that, on average, approximately 160 people suffered injuries daily due to statewide automobile collisions. In 2022 alone, 1005 individuals lost their lives as a result of these accidents, marking a 3.8 percent increase from the previous year.

Despite the number of laws that we have in place to protect innocent people who are sharing our roadways, we continue to see them lose their lives as a result of negligent and careless drivers. Some of the leading factors in fatal auto accidents across our state include:

  • Drunk Driving: Operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol can have a significant impact on a driver’s judgment and coordination.

  • Fatigue: Falling asleep at the wheel or driving can result in a driver losing control of their vehicle and causing an accident.

  • Speeding: Excessive speeding reduces reaction time and increases the severity of accidents.

  • Running Red Lights/Stop Signs: Ignoring traffic signals or signs can increase the chances of drivers striking pedestrians who are traveling nearby.

Unfortunately, any act of negligence can have a significant impact on the lives of others. If your loved one has lost their life as a result of a fatal pedestrian accident, your family may be able to take legal action. It is imperative that you reach out to a Chesapeake wrongful death lawyer as soon as possible. Your attorney will want to get started on gathering evidence on your behalf and fighting for fair compensation.
