Bethesda, MD (March 11, 2026) – Two construction workers suffered injuries after a trench collapsed during a work project in Montgomery County on Tuesday, March 10. Emergency crews responded quickly and carried out a complex rescue operation to remove the trapped workers.
The incident occurred in the 8100 block of Kentbury Drive in Bethesda at around 12:15 p.m. According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials, the men worked on a residential construction project when the trench they stood in suddenly gave way.
When emergency crews arrived, they found both workers trapped inside a narrow trench that measured about 10 to 12 feet deep and only a few feet wide.
Dirt buried both men up to their waists, and one worker had soil covering part of his head. Despite the dangerous situation, both workers remained conscious and communicated with rescuers.
Officials said the trench included plywood shoring designed to support the walls. However, when the trench collapsed, the shoring bent and created a pocket of air. That air space allowed the workers to breathe while rescue crews worked carefully to reach them.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue deployed specialized technical rescue teams trained for trench emergencies. These teams used careful excavation methods and stabilization equipment to remove soil without causing additional collapse.
The rescue effort also included assistance from the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Go Team. This group specializes in responding to complex trauma situations and supports emergency crews during high-risk rescues.
After rescuers freed the workers, medical teams transported them to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials described both men as trauma patients but confirmed that doctors expect them to survive their injuries.
Authorities have not released additional details about what caused the trench to collapse. The investigation into this accident remains ongoing.
We hope for a full and speedy recovery of the injured workers.
What To Do After a Workplace Accident in Maryland
After a workplace accident in Maryland, injured workers should seek medical care, report the incident to their employer, and document what happened. These steps help protect both a worker’s health and their ability to pursue workers’ compensation or other legal claims.
Medical treatment should always come first. Even when injuries seem minor at first, symptoms may appear hours or days later. A medical evaluation creates a record of the injury and helps connect it to the workplace accident. Medical documentation often plays an important role in workplace injury claims.
Workers should also notify their employer about the accident as soon as possible. Reporting the incident helps start the official documentation process and allows employers to create an internal report about what occurred. This report may later help clarify the circumstances of the accident.
Documentation can also help protect injured workers. Photos of the work area, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions may provide useful evidence. Workers may also write down details such as the time of the accident, what tasks they performed, and the names of witnesses who saw the event.
Construction accidents, trench collapses, and other job site incidents sometimes involve multiple parties. Contractors, subcontractors, equipment providers, or property owners may share responsibility depending on the situation. Determining who played a role in the accident often requires careful review of the facts.
A personal injury lawyer can help injured workers understand their legal rights after a job site injury. Legal professionals may review medical records, workplace reports, and safety procedures to determine what options may exist for recovering compensation.
