Newport News, VA (September 24, 2025) – A fiery three-vehicle collision shut down parts of Interstate 64 in Newport News on Wednesday night, September 24.
The crash happened just before 10:00 p.m. on the westbound side of I-64 at the J. Clyde Morris Boulevard exit, according to Virginia State Police. Three vehicles collided in the wreck, and the impact caused a Nissan Altima to burst into flames.
Everyone inside the Altima escaped safely before the car became fully engulfed. Authorities confirmed the crash injured several people, and paramedics transported one individual to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers closed the acceleration and deceleration lanes, as well as the southbound off-ramp, while they investigated. Officials said they are treating the crash as a hit-and-run, but they have not released details about the vehicle or driver who fled the scene.
The investigation remains active
We extend our best wishes to those recovering from their injuries.
Auto Accidents in Virginia
Car accidents involving multiple vehicles can result in devastating injuries and property damage. When a vehicle catches fire, as it did in this recent crash, the dangers rise even further. Quick action by drivers and passengers often makes the difference between life and death.
In Virginia, residents face daily risks on congested roadways. Collisions often happen at intersections, highways, and parking lots, where driver distraction, speeding, or reckless behavior can lead to tragedy. Families who suffer injuries in these situations may benefit from the guidance of a skilled attorney.
Victims of auto accidents may be able to seek compensation through a personal injury claim. A dedicated Virginia personal injury lawyer can pursue damages such as:
- Medical expenses – Covering hospital care, emergency treatment, and follow-up visits. These costs often continue long after the initial crash, making compensation vital for recovery.
- Lost wages – Helping victims recover income lost during recovery and time away from work. Victims may also claim compensation for reduced future earning capacity in some cases.
- Property damage – Repair or replacement of vehicles and personal property destroyed in the crash. This can include not only the car itself but also items inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.
- Pain and suffering – Addressing the physical and emotional toll caused by an accident. These damages recognize the lasting trauma and lifestyle changes victims endure after serious collisions.
- Punitive damages – In cases of reckless or intentional wrongdoing, courts may award additional damages to hold the at-fault driver accountable. These damages also send a message aimed at deterring similar dangerous behavior in the future.
Hit-and-run crashes, in particular, can complicate insurance claims and leave victims unsure of their rights. That is why consulting with an attorney is essential. A knowledgeable lawyer can help identify liable parties, work with insurers, and fight for fair compensation in and out of court.
