Blaszkow Legal, PLLC March 19, 2025

Norge, VA (March 19, 2024) – A woman lost her life after an Amtrak train collided with an SUV at a private railroad crossing in James City County on Monday afternoon, March 17.

The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. on March 18, when a 2019 Toyota Highlander crossed the tracks on Peach Street without stopping at the posted sign. Virginia State Police reported that the SUV failed to yield to an oncoming Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 186, which had recently departed Williamsburg and was heading toward New York.

The driver of the SUV, identified as Sarah Jones Mazariegos, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. There were 90 passengers on the train, but no injuries were reported among them. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Sarah Jones Mazariegos during this difficult time.

Train Accidents in Virginia

Train accidents, while less common than roadway collisions, can be catastrophic when they occur. In Virginia, incidents involving trains and vehicles at crossings remain a serious concern. While many crossings have signals and gates, some private crossings rely solely on posted signage, increasing the risk of driver error.

Understanding the dangers of railroad crossings can help prevent future tragedies:

  • Limited Visibility: Trees, buildings, and other obstructions can make it difficult to see oncoming trains, especially at unmarked crossings.

  • Right-of-Way Laws: Trains always have the right of way at crossings, and vehicles must yield to prevent dangerous collisions.

  • Stopping Distance: Trains require a significant distance to come to a complete stop, making it nearly impossible for conductors to avoid collisions in emergency situations.

  • Distracted or Rushed Driving: Drivers who are in a hurry or not paying full attention may misjudge a train’s speed and attempt to cross in unsafe conditions.
