Waldorf, MD – Students Injured in School Bus Crash on Leonardtown Rd

Waldorf, MD (October 1, 2025) – A serious collision involving a school bus carrying the Westlake High School junior varsity football team left two students injured on Monday evening, September 29.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:12 p.m. in the 3700 block of Leonardtown Road. Authorities reported that a southbound Chevrolet Camaro, driven by 32-year-old Waldorf resident David Wayne Coffren, struck the rear of the school bus. The bus was transporting 28 passengers, including players, coaches, and staff, returning from a game at Thomas Stone High School.

Emergency responders quickly arrived and treated those involved.Paramedics took two injured students to Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata for treatment. No other passengers suffered serious harm. Officials medically evaluated all other occupants of the bus at the scene.

Deputies with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office stated that Coffren showed signs of impairment. Police arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence, and he now faces multiple charges. Investigators confirmed that Coffren had a 7-year-old child in his car during the crash and failed to secure the child in a booster seat as Maryland law requires. The child escaped injury, and a family member later took custody.

The collision disabled both vehicles and led to an extensive law enforcement response. Coffren now faces charges including DUI, reckless driving, and failure to properly restrain a child.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this crash.

Our thoughts are with the injured students, and we wish them a full recovery.

School Bus Accidents in Maryland

School bus crashes are rare, but when they happen, the consequences can be serious for students and their families. In Maryland, thousands of children rely on school buses each day. Buses rank among the safest forms of transportation, but collisions with passenger cars still cause injuries and trauma.

When another vehicle strikes a bus, its size and weight often protect passengers from life-threatening harm. However, students can still suffer injuries such as concussions, sprains, or fractures.

Accidents involving buses often raise unique challenges. Crashes may involve multiple victims, and determining liability often creates complex challenges.

In some cases, a reckless or impaired driver causes the crash, as authorities reported here. Victims and their families may need help covering medical costs, therapy, and emotional support.

Common damages that injured students and families may pursue after a crash include:

  • Medical expenses and hospital bills
  • Rehabilitation or physical therapy costs
  • Pain and suffering related to the injury
  • Lost wages for parents who must take time off work to care for an injured child

Unfortunately, impaired driving remains a persistent issue in Maryland. According to state traffic reports, alcohol-related crashes contribute to hundreds of injuries each year. Families affected by an auto accident in Maryland often face financial stress in addition to recovery concerns. Working with a knowledgeable bus accident attorney can help victims understand their options and pursue fair compensation.
