Wythe County, VA – 3 Officers Hospitalized After Fiery Truck Collision on I-81; Multiple Drivers Injured

Wythe County, VA (October 15, 2025) – A heroic rescue unfolded early Wednesday morning, October 15, when a Virginia State Trooper and two Wythe County deputies pulled two truck drivers to safety after a fiery crash on Interstate 81.

According to the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred around 4:16 a.m. near mile marker 66 on southbound I-81. A 2006 Toyota Corolla veered off the highway, hit a guardrail, and stopped in the left lane. The driver got out just before two southbound trucks tried to avoid the car and collided.

Both trucks overturned, and one burst into flames. As the fire spread, a responding state trooper worked to free one driver trapped in his cab while two Wythe County deputies rescued the second driver from the burning truck. Emergency responders rushed the injured truck drivers and the Corolla driver to nearby hospitals. The driver of the burning truck sustained serious injuries, while the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Doctors treated all three law enforcement officers for smoke inhalation and released them from the hospital shortly afterward. Investigators continue to examine the cause of the multi-vehicle crash and the events leading up to it.

Authorities praised the quick actions of the trooper and deputies, whose bravery likely prevented further tragedy.

We wish the injured drivers a full and swift recovery.

Truck Accidents in Virginia

Major truck accidents like this recent one show how devastating commercial vehicle collisions can be. Because of their size and weight, even one mistake or obstacle can cause a catastrophic truck crash. These crashes often involve multiple vehicles, severe injuries, and long recovery periods for victims.

Some of the most common causes of truck crashes include:

  • Driver fatigue: Long hours behind the wheel can reduce alertness and reaction time.
  • Speeding and tailgating: Large trucks require significantly more distance to stop safely.
  • Improperly loaded cargo: Shifting loads can cause loss of control or rollover accidents.
  • Distracted driving: Looking away from the road for even a few seconds can result in a deadly collision.
  • Poor visibility or weather conditions: Heavy rain, fog, or darkness can make it harder to see stalled vehicles or hazards ahead.

Victims of these incidents often suffer serious injuries, including head trauma, spinal injuries, fractures, and burns. Recovery may take months and require ongoing medical treatment, physical therapy, and emotional support. Families also face financial strain from lost income and mounting hospital bills.

When a crash involves commercial trucks or multiple vehicles, determining liability becomes complex. A skilled truck accident lawyer can investigate the scene, review driver logs, and identify negligent parties, whether it’s the driver, trucking company, or vehicle manufacturer.
