Bailey’s Crossroads, VA (August 19, 2026) – A 59-year-old man died Sunday night, August 16, after being struck by a Metrobus while crossing Columbia Pike at Carlin Springs Road.
Fairfax County police officers were called to the intersection just after 8:32 p.m. for a pedestrian crash involving an F20 Metrobus.
A preliminary investigation found that the bus was stopped at a red light on Columbia Pike facing east. When the light turned green, the driver began a right turn onto Carlin Springs Rd.
The victim was crossing Carlin Springs Road from west to east in the crosswalk, with the pedestrian signal in his favor, when the bus’s front right side struck him. He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The bus driver was not hurt and remained on scene. Police said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a part.
Investigators with the Fairfax County Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to piece together what led to the collision.
Our condolences go out to Ali’s family during this difficult time.
How Do Wrongful Death Claims Work After a Fatal Metrobus Crash in Bailey’s Crossroads, VA?
Wrongful death claims that involve a Metrobus typically work differently than claims against a private driver, since Metrobus is operated by WMATA, a public transit agency created through an interstate compact between Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
Bailey’s Crossroads sits at the junction of Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and Columbia Pike, with I-395 running nearby, and bus operations along these corridors are subject to rules distinct from those governing private motorists.
Because WMATA is a public entity, claims against it can involve specific notice requirements and shorter filing windows than claims against a private driver. This means that written notice must be filed within one year from the date of the incident, which differs from Virginia’s standard two-year personal injury statute of limitations for claims against private drivers.
Families pursuing a wrongful death claim in this kind of case frequently face funeral costs, lost income, and the loss of a loved one’s guidance and support, all while navigating a claims process that can be more complex than a typical vehicle crash.
A wrongful death attorney can help identify which notice requirements and deadlines apply when a public transit agency is involved, since if families miss an early filing window can affect their ability to pursue a claim later on.
An attorney can also help gather bus camera footage, maintenance records, and driver logs that may not be available through normal channels. Legal guidance can help clarify what compensation may be available and how the process differs from a standard wrongful death claim.
At Blaszkow Legal, we understand that a claim that involves a public bus system can raise questions families do not expect to face. Our team can help explain the notice requirements and deadlines that may apply to this type of case.
