Merrifield, VA (September 9, 2026) – A child and two adults died Sunday, September 6, after a Honda Pilot struck the back of a utility truck carrying oxygen tanks on Interstate 66 near Merrifield.
The SUV caught fire soon afterward, and all three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, a Toyota 4Runner had been forced out of the right lane and struck the express lane bollards before stopping in the travel lane alongside the truck. The Honda then rear-ended the truck while both vehicles were stopped, according to investigators.
The driver of the 4Runner and the driver of the truck were each charged this week with reckless driving. The identities of the three people who died, including the age of the child, have not been released.
