I-95 Bus Crash in Stafford County, Virginia Injures Over 34 people; 5 reported dead

A tour bus crashed on I-95 NB, in Stafford County, Virginia, injuring over 34 people and killing 5.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA – A deadly bus accident has shut down I-95 near Marine Corps Base Quantico (near mile marker 146) in the early morning darkness today, Friday May 29, 2026. The crash happened at approximately 2:35 am.

Facts are still being assembled, but it is known that a white in color bus, operated by E&P Travel, Inc, out of Kings Mountain, North Carolina approached a work zone where north-bound traffic was slowing. The bus, loaded with passengers, apparently failed to slow and smashed into at least five, possibly six other vehicles on the highway. The force of the incoming bus shoved cars aside, and the bus itself careened off of the roadway and into a drainage ditch.

First responders arrived from local fire departments, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, and the Virginia State Police, who are the primary agency for incidents on I-95 in the Commonwealth.

Tragically, five people are now reported to have died. Those who sadly lost their lives are all reported to have in vehicles struck by the bus during the crash.

Inside the bus, 34 people are reported to have been transported to local hospitals for evaluation. Three of those injured are reported to be in critical condition. One news outlet reported that 36 people were injured; final numbers have not been confirmed.

A local news outlet in North Carolina, WCNC Charlotte, spoke to a representative of the bus company, E&P Travel, Inc, and confirmed that the bus had left Charlotte, NC and was bound for New York City.

19 of the injured were taken to Mary Washington Hospital for evaluation. At the time of writing, five of these people have been released. 12 more people were taken to Stafford Hospital. Both of these hospitals are owned by Mary Washington Healthcare.

I-95 will be shut down until the State Police Major Crash Team have completed their investigation and reconstruction.

State Police representatives have confirmed that charges are pending against the driver of the E&P bus.

Blaszkow Legal sends it’s heartfelt condolences to the families of the innocent people who lost their lives in this tragedy.

Bus Accidents in Virginia

Bus accidents are often tragic events, that injure a whole multitude of people, from drivers and passengers in other cars, to passengers within the bus itself. It is extremely important that someone who is injured in a bus accident, or the family of someone who has been injured or tragically died, contact an attorney immediately to begin investigating the facts and circumstances of that crash. There are a lot of moving parts to a bus accident, and the sooner you get someone fighting for you, the sooner you can ignore the rest of the world, and focus on your recovery, and your healing.

Establishing Liability and Negligence in Bus Accident Cases

It is important to establish liability in a bus accident case. In order to establish liability, we have to investigate negligence. In determining negligence, we have to determine who did something wrong. Was there more than one person? Did a company itself do anything wrong? In order to figure these things out, it is important to do an immediate investigation.

Investigation done by the police is very different than a civil investigation. In a police investigation of a serious boss accident, they’re often looking to see if the operator the bus violated traffic laws. This is important, and indeed bears on the civil claim, but a civil investigation goes a good bit farther. For example, if the driver fell asleep, causing a bus accident, the police will charge that driver. But the civil investigation goes a step farther, and asks why the driver fell asleep. Did his supervisor know he had just gotten off of one run, and was not capable of doing another long haul, but wanted him to do it anyway? Was the driver overworked? Was he untrained? All of these questions they are not only on how the crash happened, but who and what is ultimately responsible.

Our office, in investigating these cases, immediately assigns our investigator to begin interviewing witnesses, pulling camera footage, and finding answers to these questions. Blaszkow Legal is one the only law firms in Virginia to investigate cases so ardently on the front end, rather than waiting for a case to be moved into litigation.

Who is Responsible for a Virginia Bus Accident?

Part of the civil investigation as we discussed is finding out exactly who is at fault, and whose negligence contributed to all of the factors that caused the crash. There are many potential at-fault parties in a serious Virginia Bus Accident claim. These can include:

  • the bus driver
  • the bus company
  • the dispatching service (if different/contracted)
  • the travel agency, if they hired a company that they should have not (for example, if that company has a history of negligent crashes)
  • a maintenance contractor, if the crash is due a failure of parts, such as brakes
  • a bus manufacturer, such as Van Hool (if the bus was new, and something was defective)

There is no single, all-encompassing answer, as all of these parts have to be evaluated and investigated to determine all of the negligence that lead to the crash.

Determining These sources of negligence is vital, because that goes to sources of recovery. Each of the potentially at fault entities as different insurance coverage. When there are so many people hurt, as in bus accidents, it is essential to figure this out.

Timelines for a Bus Accident Claim

If you or your loved one have been hurting a bus accident, one of the most common questions is: How long is this case going to take? There are many factors that impact the answer to that question, but generally, for a person injured, the case cannot move to the next stage until the injured person is done with medical treatment. This is more than just a hospital evaluation, but will also include independent physician evaluation, possibly Physical Therapy, and potentially Orthopedic as well as Neurological examinations, all dependent on the injury suffered. No two cases are identical.

Once a person’s medical treatment is done, and the investigation is concluded, a case can move on to the next stage. This is assessing the value of the case, and compiling a demand package that goes to an insurance company.

In bus accidents, this is often where snags are hit. Bus insurance companies then will push back, saying they’re not going to begin evaluating a case until all of the claims are in, from all injured parties. Unfortunately, some law firms, especially the biggest law firms, will just sit on their hands and wait. Blaszkow Legal does not do that. We move forward with the case, and if the insurance company is not willing to negotiate, than we move into suit. We represent our clients – we don’t follow insurance company directives.

Contact an Attorney Immediately
