Workers’ Compensation for Injured Troopers in Hagerstown, MD

Hummer Runs Red Light, Hurts Trooper on Maugans Ave in Hagerstown, MD

Law enforcement officers in Maryland, including state troopers, are covered by workers’ compensation when they are hurt on the job. A trooper injured while responding to a call, conducting a traffic stop, or traveling between assignments is generally entitled to benefits that cover medical treatment and a portion of lost wages during recovery.

Troopers are state employees, so consequently, their claims are processed through Maryland’s workers’ compensation system, which sets specific rules around how and when a claim must be filed.

Workers’ compensation covers the basics, but it does not account for everything an injured trooper may face. Pain and suffering, for example, are not recoverable through a workers’ comp claim. When a third party, such as a negligent driver, caused the crash, an injured officer may also be able to file a separate personal injury claim in addition to receiving workers’ compensation benefits. These two paths are not mutually exclusive, and if you pursue both, it may result in more complete coverage of losses.

A personal injury attorney can help an injured trooper or their family understand what benefits are available and whether a third-party claim is worth pursuing. In cases involving on-duty crashes caused by a negligent driver, the value of a combined workers’ compensation and personal injury claim can significantly exceed what workers’ comp alone provides. Legal guidance early in the process can also help ensure that deadlines are met and that no available avenue for recovery is overlooked.

If you are a law enforcement officer who was hurt on the job, or a family member of someone who was, you do not have to sort through your options alone. The combination of workers’ compensation and personal injury law can be complicated, and our team is ready to help. At Blaszkow Legal we work with injured victims across Maryland and help them understand what their legal options may be.
