Damages Families May Seek in Chillum, MD Wrongful Death Claims20-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on New Hampshire Ave

Maryland wrongful death claims typically begin with measurable financial losses. These can include funeral and burial costs, medical bills tied to the final injury, and the income, benefits, and household support a person would likely have provided over the years.

Putting a number on those losses usually means to look at work history, expected career growth, and how many people relied on that income, so the totals can be more complicated than they first appear.

Beyond the financial side, Maryland also allows certain beneficiaries to seek non-economic damages. For example for mental anguish, emotional pain and suffering, and the loss of companionship, guidance, and advice.

State law caps non-economic damages in these claims, and the limit adjusts upward over time. The cap may be higher when more than one beneficiary is involved, and each beneficiary’s losses are generally considered on their own terms.

What a family can actually collect usually depends on the coverage that is available. The at-fault driver’s liability limits are usually the starting point, but other policies may matter too, such as underinsured motorist coverage on a household policy or coverage tied to an employer or vehicle owner.

To build a strong claim, a wrongful death attorney can step in to gather pay records, tax returns, and expert analysis to document these losses and identify which policies may apply.
