Merrifield, VA – Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Rte 29 near Braxton Wood Ct

Merrifield, VA (December 31, 2025) – A tragic pedestrian crash claimed the life of a 53-year-old woman Monday evening, December 29, after two separate vehicles struck her while she attempted to cross Route 29 in Merrifield, according to Fairfax County police.

Police said a 2020 Nissan Rogue approached from behind and struck the woman. The driver of that vehicle stopped and remained at the scene. As the woman lay injured in the roadway, a second vehicle struck her several minutes later. That driver fled the scene before officers arrived.

Emergency responders transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where doctors later pronounced her dead. Authorities have not yet released her identity.

Fairfax County police confirmed that alcohol and speed do not appear to have contributed to the crash. Investigators continue to search for the second driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run. Officers canvassed the area and reviewed nearby surveillance footage as part of the investigation.

Police remain on scene monitoring the area and asking anyone with information about the second vehicle to come forward. Authorities stated the investigation remains active as they work to identify the fleeing driver and determine all contributing factors.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones as they face this devastating loss.

Pedestrian Accidents in Fairfax CountyFatal Pedestrian Crash on Rte 29 near Braxton Wood Ct

Pedestrian accidents in Fairfax County often result in serious injury or death, especially on high-speed roadways. When a pedestrian is struck by more than one vehicle, the risk of fatal injuries increases significantly. Poor lighting, lack of crosswalks, and heavy traffic all contribute to dangerous conditions.

Families affected by fatal pedestrian crashes may face emotional trauma and sudden financial strain. In these situations, families may explore legal options through a wrongful death claim.

Hit-and-run pedestrian cases add another layer of complexity. When a driver leaves the scene, investigators rely heavily on surveillance footage, witness statements, and vehicle evidence. Insurance coverage, including uninsured motorist policies, may also play a role in recovery.

Pedestrian crashes can lead to damage such as:

  • Medical expenses related to emergency treatment and hospitalization may include ambulance transport, trauma care, surgery, and intensive hospital services provided before death.
  • Funeral and burial costs following a fatal injury can place a sudden and overwhelming financial burden on grieving families.
  • Loss of income and future financial support affects household stability when the victim contributes wages, benefits, or long-term financial security.
  • Emotional pain and loss of companionship reflect the lasting grief and emotional hardship families experience after losing a loved one unexpectedly.

Legal guidance can help families navigate these challenges. A Fairfax wrongful death lawyer families trust can review evidence, coordinate with investigators, and help protect a family’s legal interests. Acting early often helps preserve evidence and meet important deadlines.
