Suffolk, VA – Man Fatally Struck by Tractor-Trailer on I-664
Suffolk, VA (March 5, 2025) – A man lost his life in a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 664 early Tuesday morning.
Authorities report that the incident occurred around 1:15 a.m. on March 4. According to Virginia State Police, 39-year-old Corey L. B. Knight of Chesapeake had pulled his 2023 Volkswagen GTI onto the right shoulder of I-664 South near College Drive. He activated his hazard lights and exited his vehicle. Moments later, a tractor-trailer veered onto the shoulder, striking both Knight and his car.
Tragically, Knight died at the scene. Police have not found evidence that alcohol, drugs, or speed played a role in the accident. Officials stated that the Commonwealth Attorney of Suffolk would review the case to determine whether charges will be filed.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Corey L. B. Knight.
Truck Accidents in Virginia
Highway accidents involving large trucks often result in severe or fatal injuries due to their size and weight. In Virginia, hundreds of people lose their lives in crashes involving commercial trucks each year. Many of these incidents occur on major roadways like I-664, where high speeds and traffic congestion increase the risk of collisions.
Understanding the causes of truck-related accidents can help prevent future tragedies. Here are some common factors:
Driver Fatigue: Long hours on the road can lead to exhaustion, reducing reaction times and increasing the risk of drifting out of lanes or missing critical traffic cues. Federal regulations limit driving hours, but fatigue remains a major issue.
Lane Departures: When large trucks leave their lanes due to distraction, fatigue, or other factors, they can strike vehicles or pedestrians on the shoulder. These incidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities.
Vehicle Maintenance Issues: Brake failures, tire blowouts, and mechanical malfunctions can cause truck drivers to lose control, leading to catastrophic accidents. Regular inspections are essential to preventing these issues.
Limited Visibility and Blind Spots: Large trucks have significant blind spots, making it difficult for drivers to see vehicles or pedestrians near them. Failing to check these areas can lead to tragic crashes.
Emergency Situations: When drivers pull over on the highway, they may assume they are safe on the shoulder. However, trucks or other vehicles drifting out of their lanes pose a serious risk.
Victims of truck accidents or their surviving families should seek legal assistance as soon as possible. If a truck driver's actions or negligence contributed to an accident, a legal claim may help secure compensation for medical costs, lost income, and other damages.
